Modern Sensibility Meets Old World Charm
Thomas Matthew Designs
Partners Matthew Wetzel and Don Thomas, owners of Thomas Matthew Designs, have been curating custom spaces for more than 10 years with clients from the Main Line area. However, Matthew’s hometown of Stone Harbor called them to the shore, where they have set up a permanent storefront in the historic section of Cape May Court House.
As Cape May Court House brings in more new businesses including restaurants, bars, and storefronts, Thomas Matthew Designs is joining in the development, opening an interior design showroom and studio in the home of a 1905 building on Mechanic Street.
The building, previously home to Hale Bicycles was purchased in 2021 and has undergone extensive renovations in the past two years, now featuring modern sensibility with smart home technology, while also keeping the charm and personality of a building built more than a century ago.
The first floor features a showroom with home decor and staging pieces, as well as an office for clients to meet and view in-stock wallpaper and upholstery, as they work with Matthew and Don for their full-service design services. And in addition, the upstairs will feature a fully renovated and furnished, seasonal vacation rental, just minutes from Stone Harbor’s beaches.
Their design business and the new showroom mirror Matthew and Don’s outlook for a high-end, yet comfortable aesthetic that speaks to each individual client’s personality. The showroom will be updated frequently with stylish items that are both fun, yet functional. It will also feature unique pieces including vintage items, repurposed furniture, custom upholstery, and even their signature candle line, created by Matthew’s mother Anne (stay tuned for a new, signature summer scent!)
The grand opening for the new showroom is set for Memorial Day Weekend with live music, food, and beverages planned throughout the weekend, welcoming customers, clients, and the public to stop by, shop, and browse this beautifully renovated storefront.
Moving forward, Thomas Matthew Designs will be open year-round for walk-in customers looking to shop for unique and vintage items for their homes, along with full-service design appointments and consultation meetings. Matthew and Don look forward to maintaining their involvement in the community, joining the Middle Township Arts Council, planning the annual Savor En Blanc party in Stone Harbor, and hosting many community events including art shows, candle making, and more within their new storefront.
