Avalon Sand Backpassing Project: What Homeowners & Vacationers Need to Know

Avalon’s sand back passing project is scheduled for June 2025 to restore the eroded north-end beaches. Fred M. Schiavone Construction will complete the project once county bridge repairs allow equipment access. Work will take place overnight from 10 PM to 8 AM on weekdays, with beach path closures in affected areas. Beach replenishment is on track, but will not be completed before Memorial Day weekend, which may impact early-season visitors. Stay updated at www.avalonboro.net.

Avalon's sand backpassing project is moving forward to restore eroded beaches between 9th and 15th Street. While the project is on schedule, it won't be finished before Memorial Day Weekend due to required bridge repairs delaying equipment arrival.

The $648,900 contract has been awarded to Fred. M. Schiavone Construction, with work set to begin as soon as emergency bridge repairs on Avalon Boulevard are completed. These repairs, managed by the County of Cape May, restrict the arrival of heavy equipment until late May.

Sand will be moved from the approved borrow area between 32nd and 40th Streets to the eroded beaches between 9th and 15th Streets. To ensure public safety, work will occur overnight from 10pm to 8am on weekdays, with no work taking place on weekends.

Lighter equipment will begin mobilizing before Memorial Day weekend, with heavier trucks arriving immediately after.

Avalon's sand backpassing project is schedule to begin following Memorial Day Weekend.

How This Impacts Homeowners & Vacationers

  • Timeline: Full scale operations are expected to begin following Memorial Day, with an estimated completion date in June.
  • Work Schedule: Construction will take place overnight from 10pm to 8am on weekdays to minimize disruption. No work will be done on weekends.
  • Beach Access: Beach paths in the affected areas will be temporarily closed overnight but reopened each morning by 8am. Trucks will not operate during beach hours.
  • Noise & Lighting: Safety lights will face east, and truck backup sounds will be minimized where possible.
  • Safety Advisory: The borrow area where sand is collected will be an active work zone. Residents and visitors should avoid exploring these areas for safety reasons.

While the project is progressing as planned, visitors during the early summer season should be aware that north-end beaches will still be undergoing replenishment. Homeowners and vacationers should check for updates on any potential changes to the timeline by clicking here.
