Healing Art at 75th Street Beach
As the summer ebbs out with the tide, a remarkable event is about to unfold on Avalon’s 75th Street beach. Teague O’Malley, an artist and meditation teacher, is gracing our local shores with his one-of-a-kind Illustrated Intentions - visual art that serves as an invitation to both meditate and celebrate with peace and self-reflection.
Who is Teague O’Malley?
Eight years ago, O’Malley sold his belongings and hit the road to pursue a mission: sharing the transformative power of “mandalynths” around the globe. Lucky for us Avalon beachgoers, he’s landing his art right here before heading south to Central America.
What is Illustrated Intentions?
Imagine walking on the beach and stumbling upon a massive, intricate design etched into the sand - a mandala, a labyrinth, or better yet a “Mandalynth.” That’s the magic of Illustrated Intentions and O’Malley’s artistic and healing art form. Using simple tools like rakes and driftwood, Teague crafts visual mantras on the sand, serving as pathways for people to walk through, meditate, and explore with self-reflection and intention.
The Mandalynth
Mandalas are ancient art forms with a core philosophy rooted in sacred geometry. When fused with the labyrinth - a maze-like pattern inviting contemplative walks - the resulting Mandalynth becomes a peaceful place for the soul. While walking through these intricate patterns, O’Malley encourages you to be in the present and contemplate life’s questions.
- What are you grateful for?
- What intentions are you setting for yourself?
- Who are the people that bring joy into your life?
Today’s Design: A Journey to the Heart
Teague’s installation for this weekend is designed to evoke “infinite compassion,” a tribute to the heart’s boundless capacity to love and be loved. While he has a general idea of what the final install may look like, the magic is in the process. The final reveal, captured from a drone’s eye view, is often as surprising to him as it is to us.
See it live!
As you read this, Teague is working on his next Mandalynth near Avalon’s 75th Street Beach. He estimates that today’s creation will be ready around 4:30pm, before the tide washes it away as the sun sets. And if you can’t make it today, he will be back tomorrow (Saturday) aiming for a 5:30pm completion. But hurry, each piece only lasts until the tide washes it away.
One of the most rewarding points of the experience is the chance to interact with Teague himself. As he works, he engages with beachgoers to describe his artwork and encourages them to return and walk the pathways for some time to self-reflect and set their intentions.
Don’t let the summer end without indulging in this soul-reflective opportunity. Head to the beach and experience the transformative power of Illustrated Intentions. See it, feel it, walk it - before the tide rolls in and Teague rolls out to another global destination.
